Hospice of the Valley opened a newly constructed palliative care unit on Feb. 6 in Glendale for patients nearing end of life who need round-the-clock nursing care.

The Thunderbird Palliative Care Unit can accommodate up to 16 patients. The 10,500-square-foot facility is located at 13614 N. 59th Ave., Glendale. The new building replaces the palliative care unit that used to operate in leased space nearby. It is near Thunderbird Medical Center.

Thunderbird is one of 16 palliative care units Valleywide for patients to stay for limited periods for respite care or symptom management.

The inpatient hospice home has a comfortable environment, with a large family room with a fireplace, kitchen and a quiet room. Patient rooms, in light blue or gray, each have French doors that open onto private patios. The building also features spacious common area patios, with water features and attractive landscaping, for patients and families to gather.
