'Light Up A Life celebrated Nov. 18
By Susan Levine
November is National Hospice and Palliative Care month. It also is the month in which "Light Up a Life" is celebrated by Hospice of the Valley – one of our most moving community events of the year.
Every year for as long as we can remember, grieving people have gathered to celebrate their loved ones through an open-air photo montage set to music against the night sky.
This year’s Light Up a Life will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Steele Indian School Park, 300 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. If you would like to submit a picture of your loved one for the montage, please click here. Photos must be received on or before Nov. 7.
Most of the more than 1,000 people who will attend had a loved one who was cared for by Hospice of the Valley, though everyone is welcome to participate in the free event regardless of whether they have a connection to us.
For me, Light Up a Life marks the opening of the holiday season. It exemplifies everything the holidays are about – and everything hospice is about: families and communities coming together; offering support to one another; honoring loved ones; focusing on the good times; melding spiritual reflections with physical comforts (yes, we do serve hot chocolate and cookies!).
I invite everyone across the Valley to join us Nov. 18. If you can’t make it, consider creating your own remembrance event to honor loved ones who won’t be there this holiday season but forever remain a part of your family’s collective heart. Light a candle. Give thanks. Share your memories, and make some happy new ones.
